In France, Porn is Declining. But What Are the French Doing?

In France, porn consumption has decreased by 10 points due to new regulations. However, many French people are finding ways around these restrictions using VPNs, especially among younger generations.

In France, Porn is Declining. But What Are the French Doing?

Don’t look for a pun in my title, there isn’t one. Take it literally: thanks to the porn ban measures implemented in France since 2024, “consumption” (it’s like we’re talking about cans of Coke) of porn has decreased by 10 points in France, across all generations. Thanks to the Journal du Geek for this survey.

Youporn and Pornhub, the two main porn providers in the country, being blocked (as they refuse to comply with the law), one in ten adults now refrains from relieving themselves in front of a laptop or mobile screen, a certain loss for tissue manufacturers.

But, we’re in France, after all! The world champion of dodging (after Italy, perhaps) and circumventing. Let those who have never deliberately driven into a blocked street under construction while raising their middle finger angrily to show their right to defend the first word of our beautiful country’s motto cast the first stone.

Unfortunately, this strategy works less well on porn sites that have closed their access to our most passionate compatriots. Rushing with your mouse through a web page leads nowhere, but with a VPN, however, it does (for those who don’t know, a VPN is a very legal tool that allows you to pretend to be German while you’re French, or American, or even Chinese if you want).

And thus, by this subtle subterfuge, your favorite site of artistic nude films will not have the audacity to ask you to move along, and you can access your valley of pleasures as if nothing happened. 59% of 18-24 year olds use this technique.

And to think they’re often criticized for not mastering computer tools. This figure shows exactly the opposite!

Among those over 45, only 21% resort to it “favoring more artisanal but equally effective solutions, such as borrowing the account or device of a verified friend,” according to the Journal du Geek. Yes, we older folks always have a tech-savvy friend somewhere ready to help, no need to bother with a thing like a VPN.

Downside: France has dropped in the ranking of porn-consuming countries. For once we were good at something, it’s a shame. But hey, it’s for a good cause!
