Nano Banana Pro: a revolution in digital creation?

I absolutely hate using the word “revolution” when talking about digital technology—it’s been misused so much that I can no longer tell what truly is a revolution and what isn’t. So putting “revolution” in a title is always a bit risky, especially when the revolution is hypothetical, because when it comes to innovative tech, I’m never certain what will actually turn out to be a real game changer. I’ve already seen so many “revolutions” come and go.

If you’re not deeply immersed in digital tech, the term Banana Pro probably won’t ring a bell—or it might even sound like the name of a new ice cream flavor. Yet it has been circulating on social media for a few months now, and if you haven’t come across it yet, here’s the deal: it’s Google’s image-generation algorithm, one more competitor in the crowded arena of image-generation models like ChatGPT, Midjourney, and many others. Except this one comes from Google, and its first appearance sparked a wave of positive reactions, with capabilities that match—and almost surpass—those of its predecessors.

A docile obedience and unmatched precision

It’s the Pro version that has just landed on Google’s shelves and this time, without a doubt, something is happening. The algorithm seems so powerful that it appears capable of doing anything, creating anything. But even more importantly—and this is where Google seems to have addressed one of the recurring flaws of these shiny AI toys—it offers a docile obedience and unmatched precision. Nano (let’s call it by its nickname) obeys instantly and flawlessly. It’s a wonderful executor, one that might finally free us from the feeling that we’re talking to a half-deaf invalid whenever we interact with an AI.

For the full list of new features, I’ll refer you to Google.

For the revolution underway, here’s my humble opinion.

Why a revolution? Because Nano finally seems to push visual generative AI tools across the boundary from “demo machines” to tools capable of producing media that can be commercially exploited—without requiring any design skills.

We had Canva. We will now have Nano Banana, capable of turning your thoughts into ready-to-use images, with a level of quality that will send royalty-free images to the dustbin of history.

Nano Banana Pro, a tool for the average person?

That’s where many people are mistaken. In my view, Nano Banana Pro is a tool for professionals. Anyone can use it, of course, since interacting with it requires no learning—prompts are all you need. However, without artistic sense or visual literacy, in the hands of amateurs it will remain nothing more than a tool for generating starter packs.

Once again, this confirms what I said in my previous posts: the AI revolution will amplify the talents of those who already have skills and will make fools of those who have none and believe they can acquire new abilities effortlessly thanks to AI.

Below is a series of tweets—including one from Google’s CEO himself—to show you exactly what I mean.
